Surviving Winter Appeal

This year 46 Community Foundations are running similar appeals across the UK - the Surviving Winter Appeal to alleviate fuel poverty amongst the most vulnerable in our socities.

Backed by Terry Wogan, David Jason, and other high profile celebrities, the Surviving Winter appeal was launched in the House of Commons on November 10th where celebrities and Community Foundations alike encouraged those who do not need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate it to this invaulable cause. To join in, whether your recieve Winter Fuel Payment or not, send us a donation!

What is the issue?

What may seem like easy activities to much of the population - heading down to the shops, visiting family and friends during the festive season, getting to a doctor or pharmacy- can be a real challenge for those who have mobility problems. Now add snow, ice and frosty temperatures.

2300 people in Yorkshire and Humberside died in the winter of 2009/2010 from causes directly attributable to the cold and poor living  conditions.

In North Yorkshire alone, an estimated 19.9% of households live in fuel poverty, many in remote rural communities, which pose particular difficulties during the winter months

In the East Riding of Yorkshire, shockingly an estimated 47,358 households are existing in fuel poverty.

Actor Sir David Jason

"join this great scheme and spread a little warmth"

If you can afford to forego some or all of your Winter Fuel Payment or simply would like to help others keep warm this winter, please make a donation and others through the chilly months ahead.

Who's involved?

The Community Foundation Network is working closely with  Community Foundations throughout the UK, SAGA, the well-renowned magazine, and National Energy Action, which exists to promote achievable and successful solutions for energy efficiency in low-income households, including for overcoming heating and insulation problems.

Where Will the Money Go?

Two Ridings will transform all donations into grants to charities and community groups working to alleviate fuel poverty in our area.  All of whom will help us reach the people most in need and make sure they can afford to be comfortable, eat properly and remain mobile.

Remember! Gift Aid increases the value of your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you! So please complete this section of the form.

Sir Terry Wogan is backing the national campaign, and has stated:

"This is an excellent way for local people to help some of the most vulnerable older people in their area.  I'll certainly pass my payment on, and encourage everybody who can, to contribute towards it."

Wendy Bundy, Chair of the Trustees for the Two Ridings Community Foundation has said:

"Our experience of working with local community groups and voluntary organisations in the areas of York, North and East Yorkshire tells us there are many vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our local area often living in social isolation".
