Two Ridings Community Foundation

Space 109

A Story of Success

In 2005, Jo Walton arrived in the Walmgate area in York to find a neglected area with little on offer for her young daughter. Spying an empty shop, she decided to take the problem into her own hands and created Space 109 – A Community Arts Centre within York’s city walls.

With the help of friends and continuing support from Two Ridings, a non-descript 1970s shop was transformed into a brilliant white space that hosts a variety of community and cultural events, from art exhibitions to yoga classes.

Portraits of local people and painted by local hands line the hall, cooking clubs fill the kitchen with energy, the music of acoustic events, the voices of singing groups and poets resound off the walls, and hands are busied with arts, crafts, sculpture, film-making and writing.

With the help of Two Ridings and our various grant schemes Jo and her team of volunteers have created a social hub providing free activities and a drop-in centre for local disadvantaged people creating opportunities for personal development.

 Jo has said:

"Two or three years after kick starting the organisation with a grant, Two Ridings CF invited me to the Houses of Parliament to talk about Space 109 Community Arts and the work we do. It was an absolute honour.

We feel very proud to be supported by the Community Foundation, and feel that we are very much appreciated for the work we do."

This unassuming space quitely provides exciting opportunities and social hub for a community in need.
