Hampsthwaite Memorial Hall
A Story of Success
Hampsthwaite Memorial Hall, built in 1967, commemorates the lives and sacrifice of those villagers who fell in the World Wars. Today it provides a centre for the close and supportive community of Hampsthwaite village.
In 2011 the Memorial Hall received funding from the Knabs Ridge Wind Farm Community Fund, which will provide support to the communities in its area so long as it is in operation. This fund enabled the Hall to install internet and telephone connectivity, as well as computer equipment in order to improve internet competency and to counter the digital divide in Hampsthwaite. |

This project was especially worthwhile because it improved the opportunities of Hampsthwaite residents through the offer of new local classes and activities, and confronted a source of inequality in the UK. |
The so-called digital divide is increasingly recognised as a significant source of inequality in the UK and elsewhere. As recognised by the Digital Britain Report (BIS/DCMS, 2009), this is of particular concern in rural areas and amongst senior citizens.
These groups were particularly benefited by the Hampsthwaite Memorial Hall project, which not only increased public access to the internet in a rural area but, in particular, sought to assist elderly residents to gain confidence in using new technologies and reap the benefits of internet access - from communicating with friends and family, booking cheaper tickets and therefore enjoying greater opportunities of travel and experience, and creating websites for local business.
The Knabs Ridge grant will allow this to be realised before the end of the year.
